Directions:
WARNING: This project and these instructions have been written for someone who has experience making soap and knows the potential dangers due to working with sodium hydroxide. It will not outline safety methods of working with dangerous chemicals, it is simply a soap recipe for advanced soapmakers.- Measure water and lye in separate containers. Very carefully, pour lye into water and stir until lye is completely dissolved. Set aside in a safe area to cool.
- You will need a large enough container to hold 78 oz. of oils and butters. Weigh oils and butters and place in microwave safe glass measuring cup. Microwave on high until butters are melted. If it is easier, the oils and butters can be placed in a large pot and melted on a stovetop.
- Prepare your colorants: (note: the Mini Mixer is a great tool for mixing colorants to prevent clumping or speckling)
- Beaker #1: mix 0.5 oz. melted oils with the Titanium Dioxide Pigment Powder for Oil.
- Beaker #2: mix 0.25 oz. melted oils with Neon Orange You Glad Powder.
- Beaker #3: mix 0.25 oz. melted oils with both the Neon Pink Pleasures and Bath Bomb Red.
- Beaker #4: mix 0.5 oz. melted oils with the Sparkle Dark Gold Mica Powder.
- Beaker #5: mix 0.5 oz. melted oils with the Crimson Red Wine Mica Powder.
- Transfer your oils/butters from Step 2 to a large bucket/tub before you begin soaping. (You will want the oils and lye water to be close to the same temperature when you pour them. At around 100°F, you can start soaping.)
- Place your blender in the oils and tap it on the bottom of the bucket/tub to "burp" it and release any air bubbles.
- Pour the lye water over the shaft of the stick blender. Carefully blend your oils and lye water until the mixture comes to a very light trace.
- Slowly add your 4 oz. bottle of fragrance oil while stirring the soap with a spatula.
- Split the batch into 3 different containers. Two will contain 18 oz. each and the third will contain approximately 72 oz.
- Add the Titanium Dioxide mixture (Beaker #1) to the container containing approximately 72 oz.
- Add the Neon Orange You Glad mixture (Beaker #2) to one of the containers containing 18 oz.
- Add the Neon Pink Pleasures and Bath Bomb Red mixture (Beaker #3) to the other container containing 18 oz.
- Use a whisk to fully blend all the colors. (Note: Mix the white first, orange second and red third to hide any color contamination.)
- Begin layering the soap into your mold by pouring or spooning an even layer of the white soap mix into your prepared mold. Gently tap the mold on the counter to evenly disperse the soap between each layer of soap.
- Next, pour/spoon a layer of the red soap on the RIGHT SIDE of the mold only and a layer of the white on the LEFT SIDE only.
- Follow with a thin layer of white to cover both the right and left sides.
- Next, pour/spoon a layer of the peach soap on the RIGHT SIDE of the mold only and a layer of the white on the LEFT SIDE only.
- Follow with a thin layer of white to cover both the right and left sides.
- Repeat steps 18 through 22 using the remaining soap. (Note: You will want to proportion your layers to get at least 2-3 layers of white, red, white, orange and white.)
- Tap the mold firmly on the counter to release air bubbles.
- Using a spatula, even out the top of your soap and drizzle the reserved Gold and Crimson color mixtures over the top of your soap to create a design. You can use a skewer to drag a design in the top of your soap.
- Allow it to sit overnight, uncovered.
- The next morning, carefully unmold the loaf and slice into one-inch slices. Allow the bars to sit on a cooling rack for 4-6 weeks to cure fully before use.
To Use: Lather onto wet skin and rinse with warm water. Avoid contact with eyes.
