This basic soap recipe adds the silkiness of Tussah Silk to create a creamy bar with a silky feel and plenty of lather. This is unscented but feel free to add your favorite fragrance at 6%, or 1.90 ounces.
WARNING: This project and these instructions have been written for someone who has experience making soap and knows the potential dangers due to working with sodium hydroxide. It will not outline all safety methods of working with dangerous chemicals, it is simply a soap recipe for advanced soap makers.
This recipe makes a 2 lb. batch of soap using 20 oz. of oils.
Add water to pitcher. Pull off a piece of Tussah Silk about the size of a small cotton ball. This is too light to weigh on a normal scale so we cannot give a weight on this. Spread out the silk into strands or cut into smaller pieces with scissors. Add to the water. Push it down so it soaks into the water. Let sit for 5 minutes.
Slowly add sodium hydroxide to the water. Stir until flakes and silk have dissolved. This may take about five minutes for the silk; just continue to stir. Set aside to cool.
To a metal pot, add Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, Sunflower Oil, Shea Butter and Castor Oil. Heat on stove top or other heat source until melted. Let cool.
When lye water cools to 120°F, stir in sodium lactate.
When both lye water and oils have cooled to 120°F or below, pour lye water into oils/butters pouring through a metal sieve to catch any undissolved silk. Stick blend until emulsified.
Pour into loaf mold. Batter will not completely fill this mold. Texture the top if desired and let sit in mold for 24 hours.
Remove and cut into slices. We used the wavy soap cutter to cut our bars. Let soap cure 4-6 weeks.
Package and label product accordingly.
To Use: Lather with water onto wet skin. Rinse off. Avoid contact with eyes.
