Ever wonder how to create a beautiful, yet simple swirl in Cold Process Soap? The In-the-Pot Swirl is just that! Follow along with these tricks and tips and you'll be swirling soap in no time.
1. Create a slow-moving soap recipe.
a. Use at least 60% liquid oils.
b. Use the full water amount (38% water as percentage of oils or 3:1 water to lye).
c. Use slow moving oils in the recipe. For example, olive oil and sweet almond oil.
d. Limit the use of fast moving oils such as castor oil and rice bran oil.
e. Use a slow-moving fragrance oil.
2. Soap at room temperature.
a. Add lye to water and mix until the lye has dissolved.
b. Add lye solution immediately to hard oils and butters. No need to wait for the lye to cool.
c. Once the heat of the lye solution melts the butters, add the liquid oils and stick blend until
emulsification.
3. Separate the soap batter to make three colors. Blend each color moving from the lightest color
to the darkest color.
4. Pour one-fourth of one color at the top of the bowl, pour one-fourth of the same color at the
bottom of the bowl. Pour one-fourth of the other color at the left of the bowl, and one-fourth of the
same color at the right of the bowl. Repeat to pour the remaining soap batter in the same manner.
5. Pour the soap batter into the mold. The soap swirls as it is poured.
6. Use a skewer to swirl the top of the loaf.
