Learn the art of crafting exquisite wax frosting, a technique that adds a charming, decorative touch to your candles, making them stand out in beauty and style. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned candle maker, this guide provides step-by-step instructions and insider secrets to elevate your candle crafting skills.

What is Wax Frosting?

Wax frosting, often recognized as the white crystalline layer on the surface of natural waxes, especially soy, takes on a new, delightful meaning in the world of candle making. Let’s delve into the art of creating a frosting-look effect by incorporating whipped wax onto your candles. This technique adds texture, allows for dessert candle designs, and opens up possibilities for crafting sand, snow, and fluffy cloud effects. Here we explore how to make wax frosting step by step.

How Do You Make Whipped Wax?

What Do You Need to Make Whipped Wax?
Before you embark on this creative journey, ensure you have the following items on hand:Cooking Instructions:

Step 1: Weigh the Wax
Begin by placing the pouring pitcher on your digital scale. Tare the weight and measure out 8 oz. (227 g) of 464 soy wax flakes into the pouring pitcher.
Step 2: Melt the Wax
If adding scent or pigment to your creation, follow heat instructions for the wax type in use and then continue with the whipped wax instructions listed here. For whipped wax, melt the measured wax in the small pouring pitcher until it reaches 120ºF (48.9°C). Remove it from the heat and allow it to cool until the wax around the edges of the pitcher begins to solidify.
Step 3: Whip the Wax
Take a whisk or another utensil, and briskly stir the wax until it thickens and holds its shape. While the consistency won't be as "airy" as actual whipped cream, you should be able to form a peak.

Note: You can expedite the process by using a hand mixer (avoid using it for food afterward). Whipped wax can be used as is or piped using a piping bag and tip. Treat it like regular whipped cream, but work in small batches to prevent excessive cooling.

Note: The wax can set up fairly quickly so piping bags are not recommended for beginners. Start by scooping the whipped wax on top of a few candles first to get an idea of how much time it takes before setting and the consistency the wax should be before trying to whip it.

Note: Create delightful shapes like ice cream scoops by allowing the whipped wax to cool longer (around 80°F or 27°C) until it becomes stiff. Use an ice cream scoop and place the shapes on parchment paper to cool.

Conclusion

In conclusion, mastering the art of wax frosting adds a unique touch to your candle-making endeavors. From creating textured surfaces to crafting intricate dessert-themed candles, whipped wax opens up a world of creative possibilities. Experiment with different shapes and designs to elevate your candle-making projects.
