Formerly known as Optiphen Plus. Ashland Chemical is the manufacturer and owner of the trademark Optiphen Plus. We have received legal notice that small suppliers may no longer use the brand name of the product. Therefore on 11/20/2017 we have changed the product name as they have requested.
Use this paraben free preservative in lotion, body wash, shampoo, conditioner scrubs and sprays.Effective at pH levels below 6.0. Highly effective broad spectrum antimicrobial preservative. No formaldehyde donors. Compatible with most raw materials. Contains sorbic acid which offers protection for anti-fungal and anti-mold activity.

Directions:
DIRECTIONS: Slowly stir into liquids at a temperature below 176°F (80ºC). Common use levels for the oil are lotions and creams 0.75-1.5%. This product preserves water and oil based products with a pH below 6.0.
TIPS: Performs best when formulation pH levels are below 6.0. The recommended usage rates are provided only as a guideline to provide proper preservation. Adding at end of emulsion when product is coolest gives best results. All new formulations should be tested to ensure preservative efficacy.
STORAGE: Store in an airtight, cool, dark location. When stored properly, best used within 1 year from date of purchase.
WARNING: Not approved for lip products.
CAUTION: Keep out of reach of children and pets.

COMMENTS: This is a good paraben free product. Mostly used in sugar scrubs and lotions. We have trialed this product in our lotions. Results showed no "noticeable" fungus, mold, bacteria, etc growth in lotions even after 3 years on the shelf.

COMMENTS: This is my go to preservative. I've never had any mold grow in my lotions and it doesn't cause separation. I usually use the minimum amount required and have had no problems. I mainly use it in lotion and flax seed hair gel so that I won't have to store it in the refrigerator and discard it after a few days. This allows me to keep my gel in my bathroom without worry. Will definitely buy again.

COMMENTS: I use this as a preservative for goat's milk lotion using a combination of fresh goat's milk and distilled water as the liquid. 11 grams for a 30 ounce batch of lotion, I believe is the amount. When used correctly I've found that my lotions last for over a year (and longer) without any signs of mold/degrading. If you're making a lot of lotion I'd recommend going ahead and buying the larger bottle because you'll use it!

COMMENTS: I have almost always used optiphen as my preservative. I like that it does not contain parabens and I am just familiar working with it. One problem I am coming across with it now I have started using color stabilizers. I am finding that my lotions and butters are separating alot more now that I am using the two, and I have heard that optiphen can disrupt emulsions.

COMMENTS: I use this exclusively in my body lotion. It does thin my lotion out at first, but it thickens right back up with continued mixing and cooling.

COMMENTS: I have been hesitant to jump on the preservative band wagon because I prefer to go all natural. I started with just body butter, but people want something that is lighter and isn't as greasy. Because this is what people want (which requires the use of a preservative) I was very happy to see that there is a preservative out there that is paraben free. Its not all natural, but at least it doesn't have that. I will say that when I use it in my lotion it does cause my lotion to thin out immediately, but if I keep blending it will go back to thicker within a minute or so. I have also noticed that if I stop blending before my lotion reaches about 85 degrees it will look like it is starting to separate. I don't know if that is because of the optiphen, or if it is the e-wax...but either way I make sure that it has definitely cooled before I put it into the bottle.

COMMENTS: This is a little more costly than other preservatives offered on this website but not by much and it is paraben free. Whether or not paraben is actually a negative thing for your body, customers will like that it doesn't contain any parabens so It'll make them happy. There is a slight aroma to this preservative but not a bad one and the essential oils mask it nicely. This is generally the only preservative I use and it hasn't failed me yet. I will buy again.

COMMENTS: I have used several preservatives in my lotion making, but this is my all time favorite. It contains no parabens and is formaldehyde free, something that both my customers and I love! I have never had any issues with moldy lotion using this preservative. I did with another preservative I tried. I also love the fact that I can add optiphen plus at a higher temperature and it still be effective - this helps me get my lotion bottled before it thickens.

COMMENTS: Best preservative out there that is paraben free! After much research, I came to the realization that you absolutely have to use a REAL preservative in water based lotions and sugar scrubs. Without it, you are putting yourself and your customers at high risk of developing very dangerous bacterial infections. Optiphen is the only paraben free preservative in the states that I trust to keep my products safe. I'm so glad I can buy it at a reasonable price in bulk!

COMMENTS: Really good preservative I made some butters in May that did not sell and recently found them still fresh without mold or any wild funky smells ( cant use them though fragrance not a good seller).I was surprised at how long it lasts. There is a faint sweet smell that increases in once added to hot water but I have never had a probelm covering it with a fragrance.

COMMENTS: I simply wouldn't be without this preservative! I want to keep my whole line paraben free and this performs beautifully. No formaldehyde adds to the attraction of the product and the sell point. I use it in my body scrubs and never had a problem with odor or mixing. I make sure it is mixed in below 140 degrees, so it goes in with the T-50 oil. Doing so ensures the effectiveness of the product. I also use it in the multi-spray concentrate. You could say it's expensive but considering the alternative? I think it's worth it.
